The site of the former Carter's IGA Food Center may play host to a new grocery store by the end of the month.
Douglas Touma Sr., a partner of Wadhams Investment Co., which owns the 25,000-square-foot space at 5275 Lapeer Road, said officials have been in discussions with G&R Felpausch Co. about leasing the space.
Felpausch successfully bid $300,000 Monday to buy the fixtures, equipment and inventory inside the storefront.
The Carter's store in Wadhams closed July 7, about the time its parent company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy due to a $33 million debt.
"We're certainly hoping (Felpausch will) be in a position to get in and open fairly quickly," Touma said. "We believe they can do a very good job to merchandise that store."
The bid will be finalized, Felpausch spokeswoman Janine Dalman said, when the federal bankruptcy judge issues a ruling on the Carter's case. That is expected to happen today or Thursday.
Felpausch, based in Hastings, owns 19 grocery stores in Michigan.
The company's stores offer a traditional food-center feel with departments including deli, bakery, wine and produce.
Thomas Ciul, 48, will be among those happy to see a grocery store return to Wadhams.
Ciul, who lives in nearby Smiths Creek, shopped at Carter's often.
"With gas being so ridiculous, it costs money (to go to other groceries)," he said. "It'll be better than driving all the way into town."
