Save-A-Lot store coming to Martin Luther King Jr. Way

One of the nation’s largest retail grocers and grocery suppliers, Supervalu, announced Monday it will expand its limited-selection chain, Save-A-Lot, to the Northwest with new stores in Tacoma, Pasco and Portland.

The Tacoma store will occupy the former Rite-Aid drug store at 1105 Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Save-A-Lot operates 1,500 stores in 42 states.

Morris McCollum, president of the Upper Tacoma Business District Association, said the store will increase traffic for other merchants in the district. “It will be a great addition,” he said.

The RiteAid store closed nearly two years ago as the drugstore chain was undergoing a financial reorganization. The new grocery, due to open in September, will compete with a full-line Safeway store in the neighborhood.
